Police escort in Lagos
What the current rules say, who can request protection and where to apply. Contact ToTrip and we will direct you to the appropriate authority.
What a police escort is, and why people ask for one
A police escort is a team of police officers who travel with, or ahead of, a vehicle to protect a person, a convoy or a movement. In Nigeria it has long been associated with senior public officials, but business executives, event organisers, diplomats' guests and families have also asked for protection on high-risk trips, large events and long journeys.
People usually ask about a police escort for a few reasons. They are travelling a long distance by road. They are moving a person of public importance. They are attending a large event with a heavy crowd. Or they simply want reassurance on a route they do not know. Each of these is a real security concern, and each has more than one answer. A police escort is only one of them, and under the current rules it is the hardest to obtain.
What has changed: the timeline
- November 2025. President Bola Tinubu ordered the immediate withdrawal of police officers attached to VIPs nationwide, to be redeployed to core policing duties. Reports said VIPs who still need protection should ask the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for armed escorts.
- December 2025. At a Federal Executive Council meeting, ministers and senior officials who need special security arrangements were directed to contact the Inspector-General of Police and obtain clearance through the presidency.
- February 2026. The federal government announced the redeployment of police officers from VIP escort duty to frontline security work.
- July 2026. A Police Mobile Force message dated 8 July 2026 stated that the presidential order remains fully in force and that no amendment, exemption or informal understanding overrides it. Officers guarding facilities of national importance may protect only those sites.
In plain terms: the long-standing practice of police officers working as personal escorts for VIPs has been ordered to stop, access for senior officials now runs through the Inspector-General and the presidency, and the police leadership has said that informal arrangements do not override the order.
Who can still request protection, and through whom
The published reports describe two routes. Ministers and senior officials who need special security arrangements are directed to contact the Inspector-General of Police and obtain clearance through the presidency. Other VIPs who still need armed protection are reportedly directed to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
The reports do not publish an application form, a fee schedule or a list of criteria, and ToTrip does not claim to know how any individual request will be decided. What is clear is that the decision belongs to the authority and not to a rental company, a middleman or an individual officer. If you are unsure which office to approach, message ToTrip on WhatsApp and we will point you in the right direction.
Why informal escort arrangements are a risk to you
You may hear that some officers still take private escort jobs. Reports say the police leadership has ordered action against officers found on unauthorised escort duty. For a client, that creates real problems: an arrangement made informally can be stopped without warning, can collapse on the day of your event, and can put you in an awkward position with the authorities.
- Do not pay people who promise officers "for hire". There is no guarantee that they can deliver, and no recourse if they do not.
- Do not rely on a verbal promise. If protection matters to your trip, it should be arranged with the authority, in writing.
- Do not present a civilian vehicle as an official one. ToTrip vehicles are civilian vehicles and are never styled to look like police vehicles.
- Have a fallback. Plan the journey so that it remains safe and workable even if no escort is available.
Safer travel without a police escort
For most people, the biggest safety gains come from planning, not from the escort itself. A well-run trip combines several simple measures:
- A trained, vetted chauffeur who knows the route and keeps to the schedule. See car hire with a driver.
- An armoured vehicle where the risk justifies it. ToTrip offers bulletproof car rental, including the armoured Land Cruiser, the bulletproof Mercedes GLS and the bullet-proof Hiace bus.
- Route and time planning: daylight travel where possible, planned stops and a backup route.
- A convoy of civilian vehicles when several people travel together, such as a Hiace bus or a Toyota Hilux as a support vehicle.
- Licensed private security arranged by you for a venue or event. If you use a company, check its licence before you sign.
- Clear communication: a single point of contact and live location sharing for the trip.
What ToTrip does, and what we do not do
ToTrip Car Rental Service Limited is a vehicle rental company. We supply cars, SUVs, buses and pickups, with or without a professional chauffeur, in Lagos and across Nigeria. We do not supply police officers and we do not sell escorts.
When someone contacts us about a police escort, this is what happens. We listen to the plan: the date, the route, the number of people and the reason for the request. We then direct you to the appropriate authority for that kind of request, because that is the only place an escort can lawfully be approved. And if you need vehicles for the trip, we quote you for the car, the bus or the pickup with a driver. See the page on what ToTrip does and does not do, or the page on vehicles for a convoy with a Hilux pickup.
What to prepare before you contact the authority
Whoever you approach, a clear request is easier to consider. Gather these details before you make contact:
- The full name and role of the person to be protected, and the reason protection is needed.
- The dates, the start and end points, and the route.
- The number of people and the number of vehicles involved.
- Any event details: venue, programme and expected crowd.
- A named contact person and a telephone number that will be answered.
- Any letters of introduction or invitations that support the request.
Start early. Official requests take time, and they cannot be rushed at the last minute. If your trip date is fixed, plan the vehicle side with ToTrip in parallel so that the transport is settled while the request is considered.
